Lieutenant Colonel Derek Lane was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps on 12 July 1996, after graduating from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He subsequently attended The Basic School where he was designated as a Communications Officer.
Lieutenant Colonel Lane has commanded communication units at every level from platoon to battalion and has also served as an Assistant Squadron Operations Officer, Squadron Operations Officer, Marine Expeditionary Unit Communications Officer, and Assistant Chief of Staff, G-6 for the 2d Marine Division. While Lieutenant Colonel Lane was the Communications Officer for Battalion Landing Team 1/6, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, he participated in Operations ALLIED FORCE and NOBEL ANVIL. While serving as a Company Commander with Marine Wing Communications Squadron-28, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 04-06. It was during this tour that he also served as the Squadron Operations Officer. As the Communications Officer for 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit, he supported Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, and SEA ANGEL II, a Humanitarian Assistance operation in Bangladesh. As the Commanding Officer of 8th Communication Battalion, he supported Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and INHERENT RESOLVE in addition to significant coalition exercises around the globe.
Lieutenant Colonel Lane’s tours outside of the Fleet Marine Force include service as the Information Systems Management Officer for 8th Marine Corps District, Communications Officer for 4th Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment, service in Headquarters, U.S. Special Operations Command, and as a U.S. Military Advisor to the Kuwait Armed Forces J3 and J6. While at SOCOM, he deployed to Afghanistan as the J6 Operations Officer for one of SOCOM’s Joint Special Operation Task Forces from October 2009 to February 2010. Returning from Afghanistan, Lieutenant Colonel Lane was selected to serve as the Executive Officer to the USSOCOM J6.
Lieutenant Colonel Lane’s professional military education includes attendance at the Expeditionary Warfare School, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the Joint Military Education Phase II course. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Justice Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Military Arts & Sciences.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star.
Lieutenant Colonel Lane is married to the former Jill Davis of Pleasant Grove, Alabama. They have three children – Lake, Carter, and Anna.
