Giving to ISS

International Security Studies supports graduate-level interdisciplinary research and teaching in international, diplomatic, and strategic history. It is an interdisciplinary teaching and research unit at Yale University that reports directly to the Provost. It is largely reliant upon self-funding from external sources. It does not grant degrees, and it does not derive any income from tuition paid by any student at Yale.

The Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy at Yale operates under the auspices of ISS. The Program is supported by Nicholas F. Brady '52 and Charles B. Johnson '54. It seeks to revive the study and practice of grand strategy by preparing students to be leaders by teaching them to appreciate and apply the principles of grand strategy; by devising methods to teach grand strategy at the graduate and undergraduate levels; and by promoting a broader recognition of the centrality of grand strategy to successful, practical leadership.

Sources of Funding

ISS receives funding from several sources, including the Brady-Johnson Program endowment, the Smith-Richardson Foundation, the John M. Olin Foundation, the George Frederick Jewett Foundation, and Yale University, which provides offices for ISS, pays the salaries of Profs. Paul Kennedy, John Lewis Gaddis, and Charles Hill, and contributes to ISS's administrative costs. ISS's other source of funding is the Friends of ISS.

The Friends of ISS

The Friends of ISS are part of a campaign authorized by President Richard Levin to raise funds to ensure the long-term continuation of ISS's activities. The Friends are individuals who pledge financial support to ISS.

The Friends have standing invitations to all of ISS's public events at Yale, and ISS invites the Friends, as space permits, to join its faculty and students at the private dinner discussions it holds with many visiting speakers.
