Giving to International Security Studies

Since its inception in 1988, ISS has been wholly funded from external donations, and we continue to rely on support from individuals and foundations. We support world-class research in international history, grand strategy, and maritime studies. By hosting speakers and events, supporting international student research, and providing a home for pre- and post-doctoral fellows, we connect scholars working in history, political science, and other disciplines with resources and networks both in the Yale community and around the world.

If you are interested in giving to ISS, please contact us by phone at 203-432-6246; by email or by contacting the ISS administrator Elizabeth Vastakis at We will be happy to provide further details about our programs and how best to give. You can also give online through Yale, but please be sure to designate your gift to ISS. Under “My contribution is to support,” select “Other” and write in “International Security Studies.”

Alumni Testimonials

“ISS was the incubator that hatched a whole generation of international historians who led a revival in the study of war and diplomacy. And for all its success, it has never rested on its laurels, and remains extraordinarily open to new approaches.”
Matthew Connelly, Professor of History, Columbia University

“Without ISS, I would not have been able to undertake the extended research that my doctoral dissertation required. The warm, collegial atmosphere provides fledgling scholars of international history with the ideal environment in which to develop their ideas. It is no accident that ISS alumnae can be found among the faculty of America (and the world’s) finest academic institutions.”
Stephanie Barczewski, Professor of History, Clemson University

“ISS was enormously beneficial to me as a historian of US foreign relations, and in particular in giving me a greater interdisciplinary understanding of the broad subject area. Above all, what I so loved during my time in New Haven was the intellectual energy that emanated from ISS; it was palpable to anyone who came in contact with it, I’m sure.”
Frederik Logevall, Professor of History, Harvard University
