Fritz Bartel is the Associate Director of International Security Studies. At ISS, he oversees the academic programs, including lectures and seminars, the pre- and post-doctoral fellowships, and student travel and research grants. He also offers courses in the History Department on the political, diplomatic, and economic history of the 20th century.
Dr. Bartel completed his Ph.D. in 2017 at Cornell University, where he researched the intersections between the history of capitalism and the Cold War. His publications have appeared in Diplomatic History, Enterprise & Society, H-Diplo, and Passport. His book manuscript, The Triumph of Broken Promises: Oil, Finance, and the End of the Cold War, is under contract with Harvard University Press and explores how the energy and financial markets that developed after the 1973-74 oil crisis contributed to the peaceful end of the Cold War.
